Brush fire reported in Paradise Hills-area canyon

A blaze possibly caused by youths playing with fire blackened about three open acres in a Bay Terraces-area canyon Tuesday afternoon, forcing evacuations, damaging a shed and threatening homes and a junior high school.Flames began spreading through brush off the 600 block of Briarwood Road about 1:15 p.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department."They just came in the house yelling … the police … telling us to evacuate," said Ricardo Chavez, who was doing homework at a friend's house.Authorities cleared people out of nearby Bell Middle School and homes to the north, along Zest Street, while firefighters doused the flames from the ground and aboard a water-dropping helicopter.We believe ShopKeep embodies the vision, drive and innovation that define a successful entrepreneurial venture, said Alex Vieux, publisher and China visa application.

The roughly five-acre blaze damaged an outbuilding and a fence. No injuries were reported.Alemu Cherie came home to find his fence was destroyed."It's bad; it's gone already," he told 10News.But Cherie said he was relieved firefighters stopped it there."I think the house is going to be OK. I'm really very thankful to them (firefighters) to save my house," Cherie told 10News.Rose Marie Ferrer told 10News about her phone call from a neighbor."They called me at work … one of my neighbors … and said, 'There's a fire. It looks like the fire department is all in front of your house.' So I dropped everything," Ferrer said.Her 12-foot shed in her backyard was nearly destroyed, and she said the items inside were of sentimental value, like vinyl records.Next door to her, three dogs had to be taken to safety by animal control officers,Then it was time to go to work. Testers measured the length, flow rate, and water volume, composite hose the results with regular garden hoses. Their length increased by three times, as claimed. 10News was there as her dogs were returned."I'm glad. I'm very thankful," the owner said.Neighbor after neighbor told 10News they saw several teenagers running from the canyon just after the fire started.Bell Middle School had just gotten out at 12:45 p.m. and it was the last day of school.With any of the expandable oil hose, be aware holes cannot be patched, so be careful with the outer covering."We saw like six little kids in the canyon," said witness Jessica Pelayo. "We thought they were going to fight or something. I think they were smoking.It was the second encounter with police this year for road sweeper, who was charged in March with disorderly intoxication and resisting an officer in Miami.
