A
33-year-old woman accused of knocking down an 89-year-old Southeast
Portland woman and stealing her purse, and also of robbing a 90-year-old
woman, was arraigned on robbery and assault charges Wednesday.Tiffany
Denise Smith, through her court-appointed attorney, pleaded not guilty
to the charges during a short appearance in a Justice Center courtroom
in downtown Portland. She will make her next court appearance on Jan.
24.On Jan. 7, East Precinct officers responded to a home in the 2100
block of Southeast 148th Place on the report of a strong-arm robbery.The
89-year-old woman who lived there told police she had just returned
home from a shopping trip when an orange 1970s station wagon parked in
front of her mailbox. A woman hopped out of the backseat of the vehicle

During her interview with police, the victim's bank called to tell her
that someone was trying to use her credit card. That attempted purchase
was captured on surveillance video, which showed Smith attempting to
make a $50.23 purchase at a Fred Meyer store with the victim's credit
card.While investigating that case, Portland Police Bureau robbery
detectives learned of a December incident in which a woman knocked on
the door of another Southeast Portland home, pushed past the 90-year-old
woman who opened the door, stole her purse off the dining room table
and then ran back out, police said. The 90-year-old woman waited until
the next day to call police.
It
appears that Smith may have been picking out her targets ahead of time.
According to a probable cause affidavit, she was captured on
surveillance video watching the 89-year-old woman shop and followed her
out of the store and to her home where she allegedly robbed her.Police
told prosecutors Smith also followed the 90-year-old victim out of a
Safeway supermarket before allegedly robbing her.Smith was arrested
Tuesday at Southeast 130th Avenue and Division on a Clackamas County
warrant charging her with prostitution and failure to appear. She's was
also on probation stemming from a July conviction for attempted
prostitution in Multnomah County.
